Pat Smullen was one of the greatest Irish jockeys ever. Champion jockey nine times, he won every major race on the Irish flat racing calendar, including the Irish Derby twice and the Irish St Leger four times. He was prolific on the international stage too, winning many of the major international races, including the Ascot Gold Cup, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Epsom Derby.
It was a career that was laden with success and laced with self-doubt. Smullen never felt that he had arrived, and that spurred him on to even greater heights.
He had his struggles, but very few knew. He just got on with it. Then in March 2018 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. And all through his awful illness, there was never any self-pity. Sure, life is full of setbacks, he said.
However, rather than just dealing with his illness, though, he brought it centre stage. He raised awareness and raised funds for research into pancreatic cancer, channelling his remaining his energies into helping others. This remarkable man lost his life in September 2020 at the age of 43. Ride On is the authorised account of his legacy.
