EU Customs & Delivery

Important Information: Shipping, Taxes & Customs Fees for EU Customers

To ensure full transparency and a seamless shopping experience across Europe, we have updated our checkout, tax handling, and delivery workflows to comply with European Union customs regulations.

Below, we explain what these regulations mean, how customs tariffs and multi-item line fees are calculated, how carrier charges are structured, and how we bundle these costs into our checkout shipping rates so you can be confident that you are only paying the exact operational costs required to clear and deliver your order.

1. Understanding EU Import Regulations

Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, cross-border shipments entering EU member states from non-EU countries are subject to standardised digital customs clearance:

  • Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS): An EU-wide digital tax framework for orders valued at €150 or less. Local sales VAT is calculated and collected directly at checkout rather than assessed upon border arrival.

  • Postal Delivered Duty Paid (PDDP): Carrier frameworks (such as Royal Mail International PDDP) that settle entry duties, local VAT, and clearance handling fees electronically prior to export.

  • Removal of Low-Value Duty Exemptions: Under European Union customs reform, all commercial goods entering the EU, regardless of value, are subject to formal digital customs registration, line-item tariffs, and local VAT.

2. How EU Customs Duties & Line-Item Fees Are Calculated

EU customs regulations calculate entry fees on a per-product-classification basis (driven by Harmonised System / HS tariff codes and country of origin) rather than a flat fee per shipment.

When your order is prepared for dispatch, your parcel's contents are declared line-by-line on the electronic customs manifest (CN23). The mandatory fees assessed by EU border authorities include:

2a. €3 Customs Duty Per Tariff Code Line (HS Code)

The European Commission applies a flat €3 customs duty fee per distinct product classification line.

  • An "item line" is defined as a group of goods that share the exact same HS tariff code, product description, and country of origin.

  • If a single parcel contains products belonging to two different category classifications (e.g., a ceramic mug [HS Code A] and a paperback book [HS Code B]), EU customs treats this as two separate tariff lines, attracting 2 × €3 = €6 in customs duty fees.

2b. €2 EU Union Handling & Inspection Fee

In addition to the base duty, EU border regulations impose a €2 Union Handling Fee per declared line item on distance-sales parcels entering member states. This covers border risk analysis, data verification, and digital infrastructure checks conducted by destination customs authorities.

2c. Carrier Electronic Clearance Fees

To clear these charges electronically before dispatch so you face zero doorstep demands, carrier networks (such as Royal Mail) charge an administrative handling fee (ranging between £0.50 and £1.00 / ~€0.60–€1.20 per parcel) to transmit pre-advice data and settle customs funds directly on our trade account.

3. Real-World Breakdown: Why Mixed Orders Cost More to Clear

Because EU customs fees are charged per product category rather than per box, the total clearance fee depends on what is inside your parcel:

  • Single Product Category Parcel (e.g., Two paperback books)

    • 1 Tariff Line Classification = €3 Duty + €2 EU Handling + Carrier Clearance

    • Total Customs Fee = ~€5.00

  • Mixed Product Category Parcel (e.g., One ceramic mug + One paperback book)

    • 2 Distinct Tariff Line Classifications = (2 × €3 Duty) + (2 × €2 EU Handling) + Carrier Clearance

    • Total Customs Fee = ~€10.00

4. How We Calculate Customs Fees at Checkout

To keep checkout fast, accurate, and predictable, customs clearance costs are integrated directly into our international shipping rates rather than calculated as a unpredictable extra charge after purchase.

Data-Driven Averaging Model

Due to software limitations preventing us from charging dynamic line-item surcharges for every possible item combination during checkout, we analysed our full historical order data across thousands of international dispatches.

Our data shows that the average customer order contains goods spanning 2 distinct HS tariff code classifications.

Based on this historical average of 2 product lines per order:

  • We calculate a standardised customs clearance allowance covering 2 tariff lines (2 × €3 duty lines + 2 × €2 EU handling fees + Royal Mail electronic clearance fees).

  • This total clearance expense is bundled directly into the base international shipping rate displayed at checkout.

This average-based model protects customers from complex checkout calculations while ensuring that multi-item parcels are fully pre-cleared for smooth delivery.

5. Transparency in Carrier Shipping & Surcharges

The international postage rate calculated at checkout directly reflects the base costs, carrier surcharges, and customs clearance fees billed to us by our logistics partners, including:

  • Base Carrier Postage: The core postal charge for parcel weight, dimensions, and distance.

  • Variable Fuel & Energy Surcharges: Fluctuating carrier surcharges applied by Royal Mail to offset international freight and haulage costs.

  • International Processing Surcharges: Operational fees for cross-border conveyancing and overseas postal exchange handling.

  • Peak Seasonal Surcharges: Temporary per-item carrier surcharges applied during peak autumn and winter logistics periods.

  • Mandatory EU Tariff & Line-Item Fees: The exact €3 duty lines, €2 handling charges, and clearance administration fees billed by customs authorities and postal channels.

6. Why We Upgraded Our Systems

Previously under standard international post (Delivered Duty Unpaid/DDU), packages were processed manually upon arrival by local destination postal services. This legacy approach created friction for international shoppers:

  • Unexpected doorstep bills for admin fees or local handling surcharges.

  • Extended clearance holds inside local customs distribution centres.

  • Parcels returned to the UK due to non-notified fee requests.

Our updated infrastructure automatically submits verified digital declarations upon dispatch, avoiding these delays and surprise expenses.

7. Destination Overview

Depending on where you are located within Europe, your order will automatically be routed through the appropriate compliant shipping channel:

  • Primary EU Destinations: (Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, etc.)

    • Tax & Duty Framework: IOSS/Pre-Paid (PDDP)

    • What It Means for You: Pre-cleared electronically. Zero extra charges on delivery.

  • Signature / Restricted EU Lanes: (Bulgaria, Croatia, etc.)

    • Tax & Duty Framework: Tracked & Signed (DDU)

    • What It Means for You: Signature-verified routing. Local VAT/customs rules apply upon entry via your local postal authority.

  • Non-EU European States: (Switzerland, Norway, Channel Islands)

    • Tax & Duty Framework: Standard Tracked (DDU)

    • What It Means for You: Processed via standard international postal declarations.
